Exclusive | The long -term NYC show still owes to the theater millions of unpaid rents, after closing months

The immersive and immersive theatrical show “Sleep No More” may have taken its final arch at the McKitrick Hotel in Chelsea in January, but the drama is not over.

Known for her lovely Shakespeare’s Macbeth’s Noir style, the show had been a facility on the city’s theater scene since 2011.

Although closed by 2024, popular demand maintained production for another year.

And, while the curtain has finally dropped, producers Arthur Karpati and Jonathan Hochwald apparently still owe millions to the enclosure.

A New York judge last week ruled that the couple is responsible for approximately $ 5 million in unpaid legal rents and legal fees, setting in full with the program owner, Centaur Properties.

The decision follows more than a year of increasingly bitter legal entrances between the two parties, culminating in four separate demands and a confrontation in the courtroom.

“It was not a case of eviction, because they left about a month ago, they left voluntarily, without tendering the income,” he told Post Terrence Oved, a co -founding partner of Oved & Oved Llp, who represented Centaur.

“We did not ask for eviction. It was not necessary. They were already leaving. We only pursue them for the approximately $ 5 million that were owed.”

According to court archives, it seems that Centaur Properties forgave more than $ 5 million for rent during Covid-19 Pandemic, to try to give the show a financial breathing room.

But after the theatrical experience was resumed and returned, Centaur claims that production again died in 2023, reaching an additional $ 4.5 million in rental delays before closing the program for better.

The legal battle began in February 2024: when Centaur sued Karpati and Hochwald as personal guarantors of the lease.

In response, the duo counteracted Centaur and several of his representatives, claiming that they were fraudulently coerced to sign the modification of the lease that had previously wiped the clean board.

The tenant’s complaint alleged a range of crimes, but the court rejected these claims.

“This dispute is not a principle, but a principal,” said the Terrence brothers and Darren Oved in a previous statement.

“Pdnyc’s [who the show’s producers operate under] The complaint is a baseless, wrong and transparent attempt to avoid the obligation to pay more than $ 4 million in due rent. “”

In his ruling, issued on Friday, May 16, the court dismissed all against -Reclaims submitted by Karpati and Hochwald, and found them jointly responsible for the amounts due to the lease, including the lawyer’s rates.

“We are grateful for the court’s quick and good dismissal of the non -foundation complaints against our clients,” the lawyers said in a statement after the decision.

“Harlan Berger and Centaur have performed with the highest integrity throughout this drama.” It is nothing more that you will find sleep or sleep until your substantial financial obligations have been fulfilled with our client. “”

According to Oved, the decision to evict the premises was strategic, probably taken to limit damage.

“They began to realize that they closed them more,” he said. “And we told them that, as long as they stay longer, the longer our damage will occur.

The producers of the show refused to comment.
